S is for . . . Scienceworks

I have been finding it difficult to find things to do and places to go with a young toddler. So I have decided to try some places and let you know how they were for little ones.

I have a 14 month old, he has just started walking and really engaging with others learning how to play. So I have been looking at places that are appropriate to him.

Our first stop was Scienceworks!
Scienceworks and Melbourne Planetarium

Science works is a place dedicated to making the learning of science and technology fun! There are fun and learning activities available for all ages and while we were there, there were happy kids having fun all around us.

There is an up stairs area that caters specifically for the little ones, the nitty gritty super city is a fantastic area, with all different activities catering for the younger people in your life. There are cranes and wheel barrows and giant legos! There is a cafe set up with play food and cash registers so your little ones can create you a foodie master piece for you.

There is also a little room off to the side full of musical instruments to hit and make loud noise. E loved this room. As he is such a boy, he loved being able to hit the different colours and shapes to hear the different sounds that came out. This room is also surrounded by funny shaped mirrors, that Ethan enjoyed staring and waving at himself in. 

After we had finished up playing inside, there is more learning to be done outside, with a big playground and a huge area to let your little people run free. E spent quite some time 
chasing the sea gulls around. It was the perfect end to what was a fantastic day.

Entry into science works is also very reasonable. For students, concession and kids its free  and for adults its $10 and you could spend hours there for that money. Also for a few added dollars, you can visit the planetarium which is a big dome where educational movies are played, as well a fantastic way to explore the solar system and stars. these movies run through out the day and are really worth doing if your kids are a little bit older. 

 All in all, we had a fantastic day and it will be somewhere that we visit very often, especially if the weather outside isn't great, its a fantastic way to spend a few hours playing hard and enjoying ourselves as a family.

P is for . . . Painting

Im always searching for new ways to interact with my little person, so the other day I decided to make some paint and have some fun with him.
Most of the recipes I found online , involved corn flour which I didnt have, and cooking which I didnt really want to do, or have the time to do.
So I decided to make my own.

Edible finger paint recipe

Ingredients

• 1 cup of plain flour
• 1 cup of water
• Food dye
• extra water

Method

1. Put flour into a bowl and slowly add the water, mixing as you go 
2. stir well making sure to get rid of all lumps
3. At this point the mixture will still be a little bit thick (this is fine)
4. Split the mixture up, and add food colouring until you reach your desired colour
5. mix in more water until you have a smooth, runny consistency

We decided to do paining in the bath, the clean up was super quick and easy and he could make as much mess as he pleased!

Which he did!

B is for . . . Bath-time balloon fun

Sometimes I feel like I'm not playing with Ethan enough, or that we are doing the same things and playing the same games all the time.

So I decided to mix it up a little and im going to be posting some good and bad ideas that I find for playing with little people, and fun ways to interact with the little people in your life.

Last night we made bath time a little more interesting.

Bath time balloon fun!

(never take your eyes of children in the bath, especially with balloons, if popped they can become a choking hazard)


This one is as simple as it sounds. I filled a normal birthday balloon, with water. Using different shapes and sizes. I then let dude play with them in the bath.

Let me tell you, he loved it!

If you had older kids you could also fill the balloons with other objects! Toys or marbles or even glitter (if your that brave) Balloons make for such an easy fun way to enhance play.

Ethan was trying to pick up and hold the smaller ballon, which is great for his developing motor skills.
